FULL-TIME REPORT Everton gave their European hopes a huge boost on Saturday afternoon as they edged past a hard-working West Ham United at Goodison Park. In a first half dominated by the home side, chances were few and far between. Steven Naismith had the best of the Toffees chances, forcing Adrian into a smart near-post save and glancing a header wide. At the other end, Kevin Nolan was furious as last man Gareth Barry appeared to escape punishment after pulling him down. The second period played out as the first did, with Roberto Martinez's men probing a determined Hammers defence. Steven Pienaar hit the post and Sylvain Distin somehow missed the target from six yards out, but in the end it didn't matter. Martinez introduced the returning Romelu Lukaku on the hour mark and he turned out to be the match-winner, getting on the end of Leighton Baines' cross and driving the ball into the back of the net with less than ten minutes to play. West Ham's excellent run comes to an end but Everton are still in with a big shout of a top six finish.

  • 90'

FULL-TIME WHISTLE And that's full-time at Goodison Park. Everton beat West Ham United by a goal to nil.

  • 90'

DISTIN LET-OFF That's a let-off for Sylvain Distin. Gareth Barry miscues a clearance, ballooning the ball up into his own penalty area. Distin doesn't look convincing in dealing with it, and goes down under pressure from Kevin Nolan with referee Jon Moss blowing for a free-kick. Again, Nolan is furious. Meanwhile, Leighton Baines is booked for a challenge on Andy Carroll as three minutes of added time are indicated.

  • 89'

HAMMERS DEFLATED Seamus Coleman and Aiden McGeady link up down the right and the latter's cross is aimed towards Ross Barkley on the penalty spot. Barkley's head nearly connects with the ball but James Tomkins clears away. West Ham can't get out of their own half, though.

  • 86'

BARKLEY FOR NAISMITH Everton make their final change, withdrawing the hardworking Steven Naismith and bringing on Ross Barkley as the match enters its final moments.

  • 85'

LUKAKU SLASH Romelu Lukaku is in the mood now. Gareth Barry chips the ball into the striker, who has his back to goal inside the penalty area. He's allowed to chest the ball by James Collins, before lashing over at the near post on the half-turn. He looks back to his best.

  • 83'

LUKAKU SCORES Finally, Everton have the opener and it's the returning Romelu Lukaku. The goal comes from the hosts' left again, with Steven Pienaar feeding Leighton Baines. Baines drives into the penalty area before pulling the ball back towards the penalty spot, where Lukaku can drive low into the back of the net. There are hands on heads in the Hammers defence - have they let this one slip?

  • 82'

GOOOAAALLL!!! It's in! Romelu Lukaku scores!

  • 81'

TOFFEES FRUSTRATION This is turning into a frustrating day for Everton. For all their possession, they've been unable to put Adrian under enough pressure in the West Ham goal. Gareth Barry and Sylvain Distin allow their frustration to become apparent when they're penalised for what looks to be a soft foul on Andy Carroll. Meanwhile, Winston Reid replaces Guy Demel for the visitors.

  • 78'

VITAL INTERVENTION Gareth Barry skins Mark Noble in the middle of the pitch before stretching to slide in Romelu Lukaku behind the Hammers defence. James Collins is alert, though, standing up to intercept the pass which would have put the striker in one-on-one with Adrian.

  • 76'

CARROLL BLAST That's vintage Andy Carroll. John Stones can't execute a defensive header and Kevin Nolan latches on to the loose ball, before laying it off for Carroll. The England international lashes a vicious strike towards the top corner of Tim Howard's goal but it just misses the target.

  • 73'

MCGEADY FOR DEULOFEU That wasn't far away from Mark Noble. Andy Carroll brilliantly controls a Stewart Downing cross with his chest before laying the ball off for Noble. He strikes the ball first time from the edge of the area but narrowly misses the bar. Meanwhile, here comes Everton's second substitution as Aiden McGeady enters the fray. The ex-Spartak Moscow man replaces Gerard Deulofeu.

  • 70'

DISTIN HOWLER Guy Demel drags Steven Pienaar down as Everton continue to push on and attempt to find an opener. Leighton Baines' inswinging free-kick puts the ball on a plate for Sylvain Distin, but he somehow fails to tap the ball in from six yards out. Instead, he lifts his foot up high and gets a toe on the ball, sending it out for a goal kick. What a chance.

  • 67'

DIAME FOR JARVIS West Ham's back four have been immense yet again today and they're going to get some extra help now as Sam Allardyce opts to bring on Mohamed Diame. Matt Jarvis is brought off as the Hammers look to bolster their defensive setup, as well as add a fresh pair of legs.

  • 64'

DEULOFEU WIDE There's a slight lull at the moment, with teams gaining and relinquishing possession frequently in the midfield. Romelu Lukaku executes a step-over and runs at Guy Demel, eventually winning a corner kick for his team. From that, Gerard Deulofeu dances inside Matt Jarvis on the corner of the penalty box before whipping the ball past the far post.

  • 60'

LUKAKU FOR OSMAN Roberto Martinez will be worried by West Ham's resurgence in the last few minutes and he's decided that it's time to throw on Romelu Lukaku. Leon Osman is the man withdrawn, with Everton hoping to regain the initiative.

  • 58'

NOLAN CLOSE Kevin Nolan hasn't scored in 19 games against Everton but he went close there. The Hammers midfielder cuts inside Seamus Coleman on the left side of the Everton penalty area before bending a shot towards the far post. Tim Howard is at full stretch but it deflects just wide.

  • 56'

CARROLL STINGER What a strike by Andy Carroll! John Stones takes a poor touch on the edge of his own area and Carroll decides to aim a stinging effort at Tim Howard's goal. It's straight at the American goalkeeper though, and he helps the ball over the top for a corner kick, which Everton scramble away.

  • 54'

POOR CROSSES West Ham have seen a fair amount of the ball in the opening moments of the second half, but so far they've been unable to utilise it to any great effect. Stewart Downing has aimed a few crosses towards Andy Carroll - predictably - but they've lacked the precision to pick out the big striker.

  • 52'

PIENAAR ACTION Everton are looking to show more intent and incisiveness in this second half and they've stepped up a gear. Steven Pienaar goes down very easily in the box after a coming together with Stewart Downing but referee Jon Moss isn't interested. Just after, the South African is in the thick of it again, side-footing over the bar from 12 yards out.

  • 48'

OFF THE POST It's off the post! Steven Pienaar swaps passes with Leighton Baines before bending a left-footed effort towards the far post from just inside the area. The ball hits the post and comes out to Gerard Deulofeu but his strike is straight at Adrian. Good start from the hosts.

  • 46'

BACK UNDERWAY The teams are back out on the pitch at Goodison Park and referee Jon Moss blows his whistle to get us back underway. Neither team have made any changes to their sides over the half-time period, so Andy Carroll's introduction in place of Carlton Cole is the only alteration to the starting line-ups. Can either Everton or West Ham find a winner which could provide three vital points?

  • 45'

HALF-TIME REPORT Everton and West Ham United have failed to break the deadlock in the opening 45 minutes at Goodison Park, in a match of few clear-cut chances. The Toffees have had the better of general play but have struggled to break down a Hammers defence which has dug in deep. Indeed there has been just one shot on target from either side in the first half as Steven Naismith's strike from a tight angle was parried wide by Adrian. Sam Allardyce may feel that the hosts were given a let-off at the other end, though, as Kevin Nolan appeared to be hauled down by last man Gareth Barry when he was in on goal. Barry escaped any punishment. Allardyce threw on fit-again striker Andy Carroll after only 25 minutes; it will be interesting to see how long Roberto Martinez waits before putting his own key striker, Romelu Lukaku, back into action.

  • 45'

HALF-TIME WHISTLE And that's half-time at Goodison Park. Everton and West Ham United are still goalless at the break.

  • 45'

TOMKINS HEADER Leighton Baines fouls Stewart Downing on the right touchline, giving West Ham the chance to float a set piece into the penalty area. James Tomkins meets the free-kick with his head but his effort lacks power and direction and bounces wide. At the other end, Leon Osman has a volley blocked by James Collins.

  • 42'

CARROLL CONTROVERSY The Goodison Park faithful are furious as referee Jon Moss stops an Everton attack because Andy Carroll is down with a head injury. However, their fury increases when Carroll appears to limp to the sidelines with an ankle problem. He comes back on but could Sam Allardyce regret that earlier substitution?

  • 40'

DEULOFEU TRICKERY Gerard Deulofeu has been kept relatively quiet by George McCartney and Matt Jarvis on the Everton right wing so far today, but that soon changes. The Spaniard drifts infield and beats James Collins and George McCartney with ease. It looks like he's heading down a cul-de-sac just inside the Hammers penalty area but he finds a way of getting a shot off and drills just inches wide.

  • 38'

BARRY HEADER A Leighton Baines corner kick drops onto the head of Gareth Barry on the penalty spot, but the midfielder heads way wide of goal. Barry had lost his flat-footed marker Guy Demel so he'll be disappointed not to have tested Adrian in the West Ham goal.

  • 36'

HAMMERS DEFENCE James McCarthy shapes up to shoot from 20 yards out but Matthew Taylor throws himself in front of the midfielder to block. It's indicative of the commitment this West Ham team puts into their work in their own third of the pitch - they just love defending, it seems!

  • 34'

COLE FRUSTRATION The word from the West Ham bench is that the Carlton Cole substitution was indeed a tactical one, and it hasn't gone down well with the striker. Cole disappeared straight down the tunnel, kicking out at a stray ball in frustration. Meanwhile, Everton continue their interrogation of the sea of white between themselves and the West Ham goal.

  • 32'

TOMKINS BOOKED James Tomkins is going to become the first man into referee Jon Moss' book, but he's very unlucky. He seems to win the ball from Leon Osman but the robsutness of his tackle appears to have gone against him. Kevin Nolan again leads the protests but to no avail.

  • 29'

CARROLL FOR COLE West Ham are already preparing to make their first change and it's perhaps a surprising one. Carlton Cole is coming off to be replaced by Andy Carroll, but there's no injury to Cole so it must be a tactical change. That's a strange one as Cole had looked threatening early on today.

  • 26'

TOMKINS BLOCK There's another half-chance for Everton as Leighton Baines again engineers some space on the left to get a cross in towards the penalty spot. Gerard Deulofeu is there to meet the ball but his left-footed placed attempt is blocked by James Tomkins.

  • 23'

NAISMITH DENIED West Ham's tactics seem clear: sit deep and soak up pressure from Everton before trying to find Carlton Cole as quickly as possible as soon as they retrieve the ball. Cole is looking dangerous in those situations, with his pace and power upsetting Sylvain Distin and John Stones. Everton are still on top though, and a Steven Naismith shot from a tough angle forces Adrian to tip wide at the near post.

  • 20'

PENALTY SHOUT Kevin Nolan is livid as he feels he's been pulled down right on the edge of the penalty area by Gareth Barry. Carlton Cole knocked on a long ball from the Hammers defence towards Nolan, who went down under pressure from Barry. Referee Jon Moss shakes his head, though, and play goes on - despite Nolan's protestations.

  • 18'

EVERTON DOMINANT Everton are well on top and are still trying to pick their way through this stubborn West Ham defence - who are, of course, high in confidence. The Toffees have seen far more of the ball but haven't yet tested Adrian in the visitors' goal with a shot on target.

  • 15'

MCCARTHY PAIN Ouch. James McCarthy comes off second-best after going in for a 50-50 challenge with Matthew Taylor in the centre of the pitch. The Everton man gets the studs of Taylor driven into his upper groin, putting him in some pain. Luckily, he's not come out of the situation too badly and quickly returns to action.

  • 13'

DEULOFEU INTERCEPTS What an interception by Gerard Deulofeu! You do not expect to see the Spanish winger making vital interventions in his own penalty area but a West Ham counter attack puits him in that situation, with the on-loan wide man having to slide in to prevent Stewart Downing's through-ball from reaching Mark Noble in a very dangerous position.

  • 10'

COLE EFFORT West Ham's first strike at goal comes from Carlton Cole, as he benefits from a Sylvain Distin defensive header which is lacking in distance. He strikes a half-volley at goal from 25 yards out but he's off-balance and the shot lacks technique, squirming a long way wide of Tim Howard's left-hand post.

  • 8'

STONES V COLE Young defender John Stones passes his first test in dealing with the dominant figure of Carlton Cole, as he holds off the Hammers striker despite being the last man back for Everton. It's a big day for Stones, who is replacing Toffees captain Phil Jagielka alongside Sylvain Distin. Meanwhile, Gareth Barry strides forward and drills wide from 30 yards out.

  • 5'

NAISMITH HEADER A huge clearance from Sylvain Distin turns attack into defence for the hosts as Steven Naismith nearly latches onto it. James Tomkins clears away but the pressure is on again as Leighton Baines drills another cross into the penalty area. Leon Osman glances on at the near post but Naismith can't get enough on the ball to direct his header on target. Positive start from Everton.

  • 3'

NAISMITH OPENING Everton start the game by knocking the ball around just inside the West Ham half. The ball is eventually moved forward to Leighton Baines in the final third and his low cross finds Steven Naismith in the middle, but the Scottish international can't dig the ball out from beneath his feet to get a shot away.

  • 1'

WE'RE OFF Referee Jon Moss blows his whistle and gets us underway at Goodison Park. Everton are in their home kit of blue shirts and white shorts, while West Ham United wear their change colours of white shirts and light blue shorts. Can the Toffees get their European ambitions back on track or will the Hammers continue their brilliant recent form?

  • 0'

CONFIRMED TEAM NEWS Everton stick with Steven Naismith up front, with Romelu Lukaku only making the bench. John Stones is preferred to Antolin Alcaraz at centre back, while there's also a start for Gerard Deulofeu. Like Lukaku for the Toffees, Andy Carroll must settle for a place on the West Ham United bench, with Carlton Cole keeping his position as the Hammers' sole striker. Guy Demel has shaken off illness to start in defence.

STAY TUNED Stay tuned for text commentary from today's Premier League encounter between Everton and West Ham United. Bradley King will keep you up-to-date with the action at Goodison Park, which gets underway at 3pm.

REF WATCH Jon Moss is the referee for today's Premier League fixture. The 43-year-old has taken charge of 16 top division matches this season, as well as the first leg of the Capital One Cup semi-final, in which West Ham were hammered 6-0 by Manchester City. He'll be assisted by Lee Betts and Andy Halliday, and Lee Mason is today's fourth official.

WE'VE BEEN DUE SOME LUCK, SAYS DOWNING West Ham United winger Stewart Downing said: "We're not out of the woods yet because we've still got games to win, starting at Everton. Everton is always a difficult place to go, even when they're not playing that well. The crowd are really on top of you, Roberto Martinez is doing a good job and his team is playing really well using a different way of playing to the past. We've been a bit lucky at times recently, but in the last couple of weeks it's all come together. We've been due some luck."

  • 0'

MARTINEZ PRAISES RESURGENT HAMMERS Everton manager Roberto Martinez said: "I think West Ham deserve huge credit. I've seen it many times that you get into a bit of a negative run and it's very, very difficult to be consistent after that. You can come up with a good result and, all of a sudden, you get back to negative results. I think to see a team like West Ham...the team in form, there's no two ways about it and I think Sam Allardyce and the team deserve huge, huge credit."

  • 0'

HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD Everton have an excellent record against West Ham United in recent years, having not lost to the Hammers, home or away, since April 2007 when a Bobby Zamora goal was enough to give the hosts all three points. A late goal from Romelu Lukaku saw the Toffees come away from Upton Park with a victory in September and the Merseysiders have won the last three meetings between the teams. You have to go back to December 2005 to discover a Hammers win at Goodison Park, when James Beattie's opener was cancelled out by a David Weir own goal before Zamora, again, found a second half winner.

  • 0'

WEST HAM UNITED TEAM NEWS Sam Allardyce can also welcome back his marquee striker, with Andy Carroll eligible to be selected again after serving a suspension for lashing out at Swansea's Chico Flores. Allardyce, though, may choose to stick with Carlton Cole as his lone man up front, with the former England international having led the line admirably in the absence of Carroll. On-loan forward Marco Borriello is set to miss out with a calf problem while right-back Guy Demel has been suffering from illness. Should the Ivorian not be passed fit, Allardyce may have to tinker with his backline, with Winston Reid a possible replacement. Longer-term absentees Joey O'Brien and Ricardo Vaz Te will both be forced to watch on as they continue to nurse shoulder and hamstring injuries, respectively.

  • 0'

EVERTON TEAM NEWS Roberto Martinez's side will be boosted by the availability of striker Romelu Lukaku, who will return to the squad after missing the last month with an ankle problem. He could go straight back into the starting XI at the expense of Steven Naismith, with fellow on-loan frontman Lacina Traore ruled out with a hamstring injury. Captain Phil Jagielka will miss this afternoon's match, as well as England's friendly with Denmark next week, with hamstring troubles. Youngster John Stones and Paraguayan defender Antolin Alcaraz are in the running to replace him alongside Sylvain Distin. Arouna Kone, Darron Gibson and Bryan Oviedo are all likely to miss the remainder of the season.

MATCH PREVIEW Everton will be looking to boost their hopes of European qualification when in-form West Ham United visit Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon. Defeats on the road to rivals Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea in recent weeks have seen the Toffees stutter in the race for the top four. But, with a game in hand over Spurs and Manchester United in the positions above them, Roberto Martinez will still be confident of his side's ability to secure a Europa League spot, at worst. While Everton have had a mixed few month, Sam Allardyce couldn't have asked for much more from his team in February, with four straight Premier League wins lifting them from the trapdoor up into the top half of the table. Currently sat on 31 points, they may only be a couple of victories away from safety, but adding to that total on Merseyside could prove difficult; the Toffees have won their last five on home turf and have lost just once at Goodison all season.
