FT: CHELSEA 2 PALACE 1 Chelsea go second after a win in this London derby and close to within two points of leaders Arsenal, who were hit for six at Manchester City later in the day. Let's be clear about this, Palace deserved at least a draw for their second half performance because they were by far the better side after the break. Substitute Stuart O'Keefe saw one second half effort blocked on the line and a follow-up saved by Petr Cech, while Damian Delaney could have netted with a couple of headers on another day. Chelsea, though, held on to the 2-1 advantage they took into the break. Fernando Torres gave the home side the lead, scoring after Julian Speroni had tipped Willian's effort on to the post. Marouane Chamakh scored in his third successive game for Palace, levelling just before the half-hour with a well-hit shot. But a blockbuster from Ramires on 35 minutes - his first of the season - turned out to be the match-winner.

  • 90'

INTO STOPPAGE TIME We are into four minutes of added time.

  • 89'

GREAT STOPS FROM SPERONI Chelsea pass up the chance for a third again, Speroni denying Andre Schurrle, Demba Ba and Ramires.

  • 88'

PALACE SUBSTITUTION Dwight Gayle comes on for Palace, replacing Marouane Chamakh.

  • 87'

CHANCE SQUANDERED Oscar charges the ball down and Chelsea have a three-on-one break. Ramires only has to square the ball for Oscar, but makes a real mess of the pass.

  • 84'

TOO HIGH FROM SCHURRLE Chelsea mount a rare threat in this second half, but Andre Schurrle's curler goes over the bar.

  • 82'

CHELSEA SUBSTITUTION Andre Schurrle replaces Willian for the misfiring home side.

  • 79'

DELANEY A CONSTANT THREAT Damien Delaney has been a real menace in the air from set-pieces and the defender heads wide from a Jason Puncheon free-kick.

  • 78'

PALACE THREATEN AGAIN Palace break away after a Chelsea throw-in and almost snatch a leveller. O'Keefe sees one shot blocked by Ivanovic, Terry clears off the line and Cech also has to make an excellent save.

  • 77'

FLAG UP FOR OFFSIDE Julian Speroni makes a terrific save there to deny Oscar, but the flag was already up for offside so it wouldn't have counted.

  • 76'

BLUES NEED TO UP A GEAR We've seen very little of Chelsea as an attacking force in the second half, I can't recall Julian Speroni having had to make a save.

  • 73'

BAN ON THE WAY By my reckoning, that one match Ivanovic will be banned for is the League Cup tie against Sunderland. With a game against Arsenal on the horizon that is a right result for the Blues.

  • 70'

DELANEY HEADER WIDE Another Palace free-kick causes trouble. Puncheon picks out Delaney, who will be disappointed to head wide after losing his marker.

  • 69'

CHELSEA BOOKING Branislav Ivanovic catches Chamakh and that is his fifth caution of the season. It may have been for the foul, but could have been for the way he protested the decision.

  • 66'

BREATHLESS ACTION It's been a much better game to watch in this second half, far fewer errors and misplaced passes, but still we await our first goal since the restart.

  • 64'

BOLASIE HEADS OVER Palace are troubling Chelsea in the air. Jason Puncheon gets away down the right and crosses. The ball drops between Terry and Luiz for Bolasie, who heads over the bar.

  • 62'

CHELSEA SUBSTITUTION Here is the Chelsea switch. It's Oscar for Juan Mata.

  • 60'

CHANGE IN THE OFFING Chelsea are about to make a change. Oscar is getting ready to come on for the home side.

  • 59'

REAL CHANCE FOR PALACE From the resulting set-piece, Damien Delaney has a great chance but heads straight at Cech.

  • 58'

CHELSEA BOOKING Michael Essien is cautioned for a nasty tackle on Marouane Chamakh.

  • 57'

HAPPY HUNTING GROUND Puncheon scored a wonderful goal for Southampton on this ground last season. That shot was the first we've seen of him in a Palace shirt so far today.

  • 55'

PUNCHEON SHOT SAVED Palace threaten for the first time since their goal. Jason Puncheon's shot is on target, but Cech parries. The ball bounces up in the air and Chelsea clear.

  • 52'

FIERCE EFFORT FROM JEROME Jerome tries his luck from distance. He got plenty behind that effort, but it was never threatening the goal.

  • 51'

PALACE SUBSTITUTION Barry Bannan goes off for Palace and on comes Yannick Bolasie.

  • 50'

SHOTS GO WIDE Willian and Mata both have shots on goal that are blocked by Palace defenders. The Spaniard then drives a shot into the ground that loops up and drops wide of the post.

  • 48'

DEFENCE DOES ITS JOB Torres does well to beat his man and stands up a good-looking cross from the right to the far post but Palace's defence does its job.

  • 46'

HERE WE GO AGAIN Palace get the second half under way. Neither side have made changes at the break.

  • 45'

HT: CHELSEA 2 PALACE 1 Chelsea lead at the break and are on their way up to second place as things stand. The home side shook off a lethargic start to take the lead on 16 minutes, Fernando Torres netting from close range after a Willian shot had been tipped on to the post by Julian Speroni. Palace levelled out of the blue on 29 minutes through in-form Marouane Chamakh, who scored with a fine shot after collecting Joel Ward's cross. A blockbuster from Ramires 10 minutes before the break restored Chelsea's lead.

  • 44'

PALACE BOOKING Chamakh sticks out his arm and clothes-lines Essien. The Moroccan receives the yellow card for his trouble.

  • 42'

EASY SAVE FOR SPERONI Eden Hazard tees the ball up for Willian, whose feeble drive is easily saved by Speroni.

  • 39'

STILL HOPE FOR THE VISITORS Palace have scored with their only real chance of the half, and although they trail again there is always hope looking at uncharacteristically poorly Chelsea have defended in recent weeks.

  • 36'

GOAL DETAILS Chelsea moved the ball quickly and Hazard cut the ball back for Ramires on the edge of the box. The Brazilian lashed a rocket into the top corner. That was a sweet, sweet strike.

  • 35'

GOAL: CHELSEA 2 PALACE 1 Ramires nets his first Premier League goal of the season and Chelsea are back in front.

  • 32'

WARD WITH THE ASSIST Highly-rated former Portsmouth full-back Joel Ward was credited with the assist on that Palace goal.

  • 31'

GOAL DETAILS Chelsea had men back in defence, but they all left the former Arsenal striker, who cut back on to his left foot after collecting a cross from the left before driving a sweet shot past Cech.

  • 30'

GOAL: CHELSEA 1 PALACE 1 Marouane Chamakh levels for Palace.

  • 29'

SHORT OF GOALS Essien has not scored since November 2010. He was later sent off in that match against Fulham.

  • 27'

WIDE FROM ESSIEN Essien tries his luck from 25 yards, but his strike drifts wide of the far post.

  • 26'

PALACE SUBSTITUTION Here is that Palace switch. Kagisho Dikgacoi appears to have a muscular injury and O'Keefe comes on in his place.

  • 25'

CHANGE IN THE OFFING Palace are getting ready to make a change here. It looks like Stuart O'Keefe is coming on.

  • 22'

ONLY JUST WIDE Juan Mata produces some wonderful skill on the right and backheels the ball for Ivanovic, whose angled strike whistles past the far post.

  • 20'

SIGNS NOT GOOD Bad news for Palace fans is that your side have lost the previous 10 matches in which they trailed this season.

  • 17'

GOAL DETAILS Willian's shot was tipped on to the post by the luckless Speroni, with Torres sharper than the Palace defenders and first to the loose ball before stroking it home.

  • 16'

GOAL: CHELSEA 1 PALACE 0 Chelsea are in front. It's a goal for Fernando Torres.

  • 13'

WAITING FOR THE BREAKTHROUGH Ivanovic crosses from the right but his delivery is over everyone. Willian goes and retrieves the ball but the move breaks down.

  • 9'

LEADING THE LINE Fernando Torres holds the ball up well and wins Chelsea a free-kick. The home side take it quickly and earn themselves a corner, which comes to nothing.

  • 8'

WHAT JOSE WANTS FOR CHRISTMAS Chelsea have only kept one clean sheet in their last 10 league games. A win, a good performance and shutting out the opposition would be top of Jose Mourinho's wishlist today.

  • 5'

SLACK AT THE BACK Palace almost profit from some slack Chelsea passing. Cameron Jerome nutmegs David Luiz, but John Terry is across to make an excellent tackle.

  • 4'

HOW THEY LINE UP Eden Hazard has started on the right today, with Willian in the centre and Juan Mata down the left.

  • 3'

VISITORS IN BLACK Palace are in black today, with a red and blue diagonal stripe across their shirt.

  • 1'

HERE WE GO Chelsea get the game under way, defending the Matthew Harding Stand end.

  • 0'

TEAM NEWS Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, John Obi Mikel, Oscar and Demba Ba are all rested by Chelsea. Palace's Dean Moxey is ruled out through injury, his place going to Adrian Mariappa.

PREVIEW With Arsenal visiting Manchester City and Liverpool travelling to Tottenham this weekend, Chelsea welcome Crystal Palace to Stamford Bridge on Saturday knowing that a win will see them gain ground on at least two and potentially four of their title rivals. Jose Mourinho's men will be looking to bounce back from last weekend's damaging defeat at Stoke City and can take solace from the fact that only once in two spells with the Portuguese at the helm have they suffered back-to-back Premier League defeats. As perverse as it sounds, in some ways this is a difficult game to call. Looking at the comparative strengths of both squads and Chelsea's hugely impressive recent record at Stamford Bridge it should be a comprehensive home win. But Palace are full of confidence after their recent upturn in results and the Blues have looked fallible at times against lesser opponents. Let's not forget they have slipped up at Newcastle and Stoke in the past five weeks and their last home defeat has uncanny parallels with today's fixture. It came all the way back at the start of January to Queens Park Rangers, another struggling London club battling for their lives who were given no hope of victory. Palace have looked a different side under new manager Tony Pulis: well organised, tight at the back and difficult to break down. Chelsea and their manager may have to show patience this afternoon. Today's game kicks off at 1500GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.

PLAYERS TO WATCH Eden Hazard has been one of Chelsea's standout performers this season and the Blues have five wins and a draw in the six matches where the Belgian has contributed at least a goal or an assist. Palace's Marouane Chamakh has scored in successive Premier League appearances for the first time since November 2010. So which is rarer: a total solar eclipse or the Moroccan netting in three consecutive league appearances? You'd be quite right if you said the latter event, which has yet to be witnessed by anyone on planet Earth apart from - perhaps - those playing on gaming consoles.

HEAD TO HEAD Chelsea have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 14 wins to four by Palace and 14 games being drawn. At Selhurst Park, Chelsea have seven wins to three by Palace, with a further six meetings ending up all square. Palace have conceded a total of ten goals in their last two trips to Stamford Bridge and their only win came all the way back in March 1982, a 2-1 success in the old Second Division. The last meeting between the sides at the Bridge was on Mar. 19, 2005, Chelsea winning 4-1 with goals from Frank Lampard (29 mins), Joe Cole (54) and two from Mateja Kezman (78 and 90). The Palace reply came from Aki Riihilahti (42).

FORM GUIDE Chelsea start the day in third place, level with second-placed Liverpool on 30 points and five behind leaders Arsenal. The Blues lost at Stoke last time out, ending a run of three successive victories. Chelsea are one of three teams still to be beaten at home in the Premier League, dropping only two points to West Bromwich Albion, which would have been three but for being awarded a highly debatable late penalty. Palace are 19th, with 13 points from their 15 games. The Eagles have lost six of their seven away games, their one success being a 1-0 win at Hull on Nov. 23. After losing nine of their first ten games, Palace have won three of their last four.

EARLY TEAM NEWS Chelsea defender Gary Cahill misses the match with a quadriceps injury and Ashley Cole will be back on the bench having only just come back after a lengthy injury lay-off. Ryan Bertrand is a week away from returning after a knock and Marco van Ginkel (knee) is a long-term absentee. Dean Moxey is doubtful for Palace with a hamstring injury having limped off in the first half of last weekend's win over Cardiff. Yannick Bolasie is available following suspension, but Jack Hunt (ankle), Glenn Murray (knee), Jerome Thomas (groin) and Adlene Guedioura (rib) remain out.

MAN IN THE MIDDLE Taking charge of today's game is Mark Clattenburg, who has been a member of the elite panel of Premier League referees since 2004. The Tyne & Wear official has shown 33 yellow cards in 10 Premier League games this season and awarded two penalties. Clattenburg dismissed six players last season, the most among top-flight referees, and two of whom were Chelsea players, Branislav Ivanovic and Fernando Torres, who both got their marching orders in the same home defeat against Manchester United. Since dismissing West Brom's Goran Popov in the home defeat by Spurs in February Clattenburg has gone 29 games in all competitions without producing a red card. The referee's assistants today are Simon Beck and Ron Ganfield, while Lee Mason is the fourth official.
