FULL TIME SUMMARY The final whistle rings around the Etihad and is scarcely audible above the sighs of relief emitted from all concerned with Manchester City. A defensive display to forget, but who needs defence when you have attacking players of the quality on display here tonight. Some truly inspired play from a combination of sources, the dynamism, craft and energy of David Silva combining with the guile of Nasri, the power and composure of Toure and the brute strength and finishing prowess of Alvaro Negredo, who completed a fine hat trick in the final moments. The night belongs to Aguero however, whose two goals set the home side on the right track, the first an accomplished finish from the penalty spot, and the second a superbly executed turn and finish. Negredo added a third after more excellent work from Aguero, but CSKA fought back and scored just before the break to keep things interesting. Doumbia also bagged a brace when he put away a penalty gifted to the Russian side by Gael Clichy, who hauled the Ivorian to the deck needlessly when he was going nowhere. Negredo lit the final banger to end the fireworks on the pitch, and on this bonfire night Pellegrini finally lit a flame under City's challenge to make serious progress in this competition.

  • 90'

GOOOAAALLL!!! Negredo wraps it up with a header at the back post after a lovely dinked cross from James Milner, the substitute providing the Spaniard with his first hat trick in City colours. The icing on the cake there for Manchester City.

  • 90'

CITY ALMOST THERE The game is edging ever closer to it's inevitable conclusion here, and though Aguero has faded almost from sight in this second half, he did more than enough in that first period to lay some very solid foundations for his team. City are on the verge of a historic win, minutes away from guaranteeing their place in the last 16.

  • 86'

ELM BRANCHES OUT A good piece of build up play releases Elm, who lets fly with a shot which could have troubled Pantilimon until it hit Vitinho and deflected wide for a City goal kick.

  • 84'

DOUMBIA A THORN IN CITY'S SIDE Seydou Doumbia is proving too hot to handle at times for City's flagging defence, gliding past Nastasic with ease and winning a free kick 30 yards from goal. It is played quickly however and the impetus is lost with City regaining possession.

  • 83'

CITY STRETCHING CSKA City trying to slow things down here, spraying the ball around and stretching CSKA's tiring team.

  • 80'

GAME STILL OPEN It is still a very open game here with possession changing hands at a rate of knots, both sides probing and pushing trying to find another goal, and it could come from anywhere as CSKA press, leaving themselves increasingly open at the back.

  • 77'

CITY CAN'T CHOKE NOW, SURELY? You do get the feeling that if CSKA do get an unlikely result out of this one then it will be very much down to City's own rather than through any of the Moscow outfit's own work. Almost another for City there however but the ball is hooked away for a corner as it trickles across the goalmouth.

  • 75'

MAN CITY'S GAME TO LOSE There are always two sides to a story, and it is very much a tale of two, or perhaps three, strikers in this match. Negredo almost seals his hat trick with a very neat piece of play on the edge of the box but he lashes over after creating a chance out of nothing.

  • 73'

CSKA'S BACKS ARE UP NOW You get the impression that a better side than CSKA would have cleaned up here with City's defence in disarray at the moment. Football at this level can be ruthless and it remains to be seen whether City have enough about them to truly establish themselves at the top table.

  • 72'

GOOOAAALLL!!! Seydou Doumbia joins the club on two goals in this match, putting away the penalty he won with consumate ease. City gift another lifeline to the Russian side here.

  • 70'

CSKA PENALTY Speaking of choking, Clichy needlessly drags Doumbia to the floor and it's a penalty for the away side!

  • 67'

CITY FANS SETTLING IN Not quite a full house at the Etihad tonight, and that is perhaps understandable given the City's recent tendency to choke on European nights. It would seem they must do more to ensure their fans really get behind them for these games and to assert themselves in the true elite of European football, but this is certainly a step in the right direction.

  • 65'

SILVA LIMPS OFF A slight worry for the City fans here, who applaud vigorously as David Silva makes way for Alex Kolarov. The diminuitive Spaniard looked in some discomfort there and his removal seems the right option at this point

  • 62'

CSKA FANS SMOKING What looks like a flare emits plumes of red smoke from the away end here, with the Russian club's supporters seemingly intent on creating a negative reputation for themselves - another example of frankly foolish behaviour.

  • 60'

HONDA ENGINE The Japanese playmaker is doing his utmost to keep his side at the races in this game, playing some inventive football and looking to set his frontmen away. They are not on the same wavelength at this moment unfortunately for the Reds, and his efforts are again in vain as Doumbia fails to capitalise.

  • 57'

NEAT AND TIDY NEGREDO Although Aguero is hogging the limelight, and deservedly so, Alvaro Negredo's contribution should not be overlooked. He has been a very effective signing thus far, and is enjoying a profitable start to his career in English football. He has carried that form with him into European competition as well, and will surely cement his place in the starting XI with a few more performances of this stature.

  • 55'

CSKA NOT GIVING UP The Russians are not giving up without a fight however and are showing plenty of endeavour, Nababkin venturing forward and popping up in the box but to no avail. They will keep throwing themselves at Man City's defence and hope that something can creep through.

  • 52'

CSKA BEATEN 4-1 here, and surely that is curtains for the men from Russia. Their game plan is in tatters again after another sparkling goal from City, and a comeback here looks well beyond them at this point.

  • 51'

GOOOAAALLL!!! Ask and you shall receive. Delightful play as Nasri beats the offside trap, flicks the ball across the keeper to Negredo, and another tap in for the Spaniard.

  • 49'

CSKA ATTACK CSKA's willingness to attack is just as likely to provide their undoing however, as City, and in particular Aguero, will be alert to any opportunity to grab a hatful of goals.

  • 47'

COULD BE A CRACKER It's sure to be an entertaining half however, with CSKA left with no option other than to have a real go here, which could suit their style. They will be looking to exploit any lapse in City's concentration, and James Milner's introduction could help City shore things up.

  • 46'

BACK UNDERWAY We're back underway here and it's surely just an exercise in seeing this one out now for City.

  • 45'

SUPER CITY ARE FANTASTIC, CSKA? NOT ATROCIOUS, BUT MUST DO BETTER To paraphrase that famous and oft recycled headline, City, and in particular Sergio Aguero, were in really fine fettle in that first period, and raced to a commmanding 3-0 lead. Some horrible defending let CSKA register on the scoresheet towards the end of the half however, and City's constant enforced chopping and changing of their back four looks like being the only potential stumbling block for a side who look simply irresistible going forward. Aguero is sparkling here, amply supported by David Silva and Samir Nasri, the Argentinian wizard looking every bit the Premier League player of the moment. His second was a particular highlight, showing up an experienced international in Berezutskiy, the big Russian left bewildered by Aguero's quickness of both mind and feet. He even got an assist, providing Negredo with possibly the easiest goal he will ever score after some excellent work. CSKA have not made it easy for themselves however, and got off to a terrible opening with Tosic going to ground and somewhat foolishly gifting the home side a perfect start. As it stands, City are through, and deservedly so.

  • 45'

GOOOAAALLL!!! Doumbia scores after some porous defending from Manchester City. The Ivorian was played through and rounded the keeper with ease after the City back four parted like the proverbial red sea. Really poor from City there.

  • 44'

SO CLOSE NEGREDO The ball finds its way out to Pablo Zabaleta who fires in a low cross which Negredo narrowly fails to convert. It is kept in by Aguero and finds Silva who is surprised to find the ball at his feet and fluffs his finish.

  • 42'

NO GOALS IN PLZEN This group's other game is currently scoreless, which could in all eventuality have no impact whatsoever on the final standings, but it has been a very encouraging display from City whose destiny is in their own hands.

  • 42'

AGUERO FLYING Almost the ultimate hat trick goal there from Aguero, who is attempting the outrageous here with confidence flowing through him. His attempted overhead kicked looked to be heading just wide before it was blocked but it is a measure of his confidence that he would even try such a manoeuvre at this stage.

  • 37'

SUPER CITY It is a pleasure to watch football when it is played this well, a truly dominant display from Manchester City with only the occasional wobble so far. Aguero is tormenting the beleagured Russians, with everything he touches seemingly turning to goal at the moment.

  • 36'

SUPERB NASTASIC Superb tackle from Nastasic to deny Musa after the Nigerian was threaded through by Doumbia. Musa has stayed down after that challenge which was strong but well timed from City's centre half.

  • 34'

ARE YOU NORWICH IN DISGUISE? Some amusing chants coming from the City fans now, most notably cries of 'Are you Norwich in disguise?' They can afford to be pleased with their side's display so far, with 63% of possession and a commanding lead now established. CSKA look shellshocked and it is hard to see a way back for them.

  • 31'

GOOOAAALLL!!! A hammering it is. Negredo gets in on the act, and who should assist him but Sergio Aguero. The giant Spaniard could hardly miss after some more excellent play from Aguero left him with a tap in. Scintillating stuff from City.

  • 30'

TOURE SHOOTS Toure lets fly from 25 yards out and the Russians escape again, the ball narrowly missing Akinfeev's left hand post. Toure scored from a similar position against Plzen and has shown he is eminently capable of scoring from range. CSKA look in danger of receiving a hammering here.

  • 28'

CSKA PROFLIGATE It is a story of two attacks here, with CSKA's shot count comfortably higher than City's, but the Army Men are lacking a finisher in the form of his life. Man City have no such problems however and Aguero is on a hat trick yet again this season.

  • 26'

AUDACIOUS AGUERO It was a really audacious turn from Aguero there and an accomplished finish to match. Manchester City will not want to rely solely on the frontman to guarantee their passage however, and their defensive unit still seems to be lacking cohesiveness with a nervy moment from Joe Hart's replacement Pantilimon the latest in a series of decidedly dodgy moments for the home side.

  • 21'

GOOOAAALLL!!! Another for City and it's that man Aguero again. He turned Berezutskiy like he wasn't there and slotted a low finish past Akinfeev. The Argentinian is on fire at the moment and is dragging his side through almost single handedly!

  • 20'

KOMPANY WATCHES ON Vincent Kompany watches on from the sidelines, the Belgian again ruled out with a thigh complaint. This is his sixth Champions League campaign and, like his Manchester City teammates, he has never qualified for the next phase.

  • 19'

SAMIR AND SILVA SHOW Silva smashes a shot into the side netting after some wonderful jinking play from Samir Nasri. A few of the CSKA defenders have been left with twisted blood after that exhibition, the Frenchman turning them this way and that before the ball fell to Silva.

  • 17'

ONE GOAL NOT ENOUGH One goal is unlikely to be enough in this match, with CSKA boasting great pace and no lack of guile in their forward players. They always look capable of a breakaway and City will need to be wary that this lackadaisical start does not continue.

  • 14'

SLOPPY CITY Manchester City cannot afford to switch off here, Nastasic giving away the ball in a dangerous area and putting his side into a compromising situation. The ball is cleared away from the resulting corner but the back four needs to get its concentration back or Moscow could punish them.

  • 12'

TOSIC AGAIN Tosic was perhaps lucky to escape a booking with his tackle for the penalty but his name goes into the referee's book this time. Manchester is not a happy hunting ground for the Serb it seems.

  • 11'

BRILLIANT CHANCE FOR DOUMBIA The ball breaks for Doumbia who lashes over, that was a great chance and Leonid Slutsky was not best pleased with the Ivorian's rushed finish.

  • 11'

CSKA FREE KICK Yaya Toure flies into a tackle and it was a fair one, winning the ball, but the referee deems it illegal. He explains to Toure that although he won the ball it was a dangerous tackle. The free kick is deflected behind for a corner.

  • 7'

TACKLING TOSIC The Russian player of the month excels in forward areas but defending is really not his strong suit. His tackle on Silva was agricultural at best and there were no complaints from his side at the award of that penalty.

  • 4'

WHAT A START There was some lovely build up play in the run up to that goal, it has to be said, with Fernandinho pulling the strings and Man City retaining possession from the kick off. A brilliantly taken penalty by Aguero makes him Manchester City's leading scorer in European competition.

  • 3'

GOOOAAALLL!!! Aguero steps up, and he was never going to miss. He buries it into the top right hand corner beyond the despairing dive of Akinfeev.

  • 3'

PENALTY! A comfortable start for Manchester City as they spray the ball around with ease. Silva goes down in the box and it's a penalty!

  • 1'

FIREWORKS? We're underway here and a tantalising game is in prospect. Will there be fireworks on the pitch as well as outside it on bonfire night? Let's find out.

  • 0'

CITY STARTERS Manchester City's inability to select a settled back four has counted against them at times this season, and it's a similar story this evening, with Martin Demichelis joining Matija Nastasic at centre back, as Vincent Kompany's stay on the sidelines is extended. Demichelis is not a bad sub to have though, a Champions League finalist and Argentinian international. Pellegrini will be hoping that these two can form a partnership similar to that of Lescott and Kompany in that title winning side of two years ago.

MATCH PREVIEW This game promises to be a tasty one for a number of reasons. Manchester City go into this one with a place in the round of 16 firmly in their sights, and a victory here would assure safe passage to the next round assuming Viktoria Plzen do not pull off a huge shock against Bayern Munchen. From CSKA's point of view, the chase for second place in this group is far from over, and three points here could see Leonid Slutsky's men leapfrog Man City into that coveted qualifying position, although a quick look at the stats will tell you that seems unlikely. CSKA have never won in England, their record currently standing at no wins, three draws and one loss from their four visits, and apart from their defeat to Bayern, Man City are unbeaten in 20 games in UEFA competition. The stakes then are high enough as it is, but when you factor in the animosity created by the disgraceful scenes in the return fixture a fortnight ago, when Yaya Toure was on the receiving end of a torrent of racist abuse from the home fans at the Arena Khimki, this should be a real cracker of a match. We are unlikely to see a repeat of the Russian fans shameful antics tonight, as only 500 tickets have been sold for the away section, and Manchester City has instructed its stewards to be as vigilant as always in enforcing the clubs zero tolerance policy towards racism.

ZABALETA RALLIES TROOPS Ever reliable full back Pablo Zabaleta has issued a call to arms for his team mates this week. He said "We know that the owners been spending much money to try and build a good team and try to have one of the best teams in Europe. Sometimes it takes time. We won the FA Cup and the Premier League, (but) the Champions League is a different competition. You play against the best teams in Europe. It is time for this club to take a step forward." The Argentinian stalwart has become an essential part of the team with his selfless and energetic displays winning many admirers, and has clearly set his heart on moving onwards and upwards with City. He, and the club, will get few chances better than this to fulfil their mutual ambitions.

PELLEGRINI PLEDGE Manuel Pellegrini sounded hopeful when interviewed on his sides chances of making the next round. He said "For Manchester City it would be a really great achievement. We all know what happened the last two years - they couldn't get to the round of 16. For a club that is trying to grow every day, to go to the next round is very important." It seems to be a straight race for second spot between City and tonight's opponents, and the ball is very much in the Manchester team's court. When the issue of the CSKA fans' conduct in the last meeting between these two was raised, the Chilean was in combative mood. "The fans of CSKA made an important mistake,” said Pellegrini. “As for the club, I don't know why they denied it at the beginning but Uefa acted and gave them the punishment they deserved. I hope we can leave it in the past but it is something for Russian fans to consider because they have a World Cup in their country.” Pellegrini also paid testament to the professionalism of Yaya Toure, the midfield lynchpin who was the target for the fans abuse, stating "Maybe Yaya can't forget what happened in Russia,” he said. “But this will be a special match for him because Manchester City can go to the next stage. He will be only thinking about football.”

EARLY CSKA TEAM NEWS CSKA have been rocked by the news that influential playmaker and star man Keisuke Honda will complete his long rumoured move to Italian outfit AC Milan in the January transfer window. They have a capable successor in place however, namely Russian international and wonderkid Alan Dzagoev, who wowed many with his performances at Euro 2012, although Dzagoev has not been included in the CSKA squad this evening, set to miss out with a groin strain. Zoran Tosic was in fine form in their 5-1 thrashing of Kuban Krasnodar at the weekend, and Leonid Slutskiy will be hoping he can carry that form into tonight's clash.

  • 0'

EARLY MANCHESTER CITY TEAM NEWS Perhaps the most interesting piece of team news ahead of tonight's clash is the fact that Joe Hart will continue to warm the bench, Costel Pantillimon again preferred to the current England number one. Hart's recent travails have been both startling and at times difficult to watch, with the extent of his current lack of confidence brought into sharp focus by his admission that some time on the sidelines would be 'useful.' Pantillimon has performed admirably in his stead, keeping two clean sheets in two games, and starts a third game in succession. City boss Manuel Pellegrini was quoted as saying “Joe has reacted very well to being left out of the team, as a professional player. It is a good thing to have a rest. “He is working without a problem, and supporting Costel. Obviously, nobody wants to be out of the team, but he thinks it will be useful for him also. “I have said that I don't know when Joe will come back to the team, but it is very important for him to have a rest after playing for 2½ years. We will see [when he will come back]. As for today, Costel is playing.” Tonight's game is a vital one for City, and it seems that Pellegrini will keep faith with the giant Romanian, and leave the stricken Englishman to dwell further on his, hopefully, temporary fall from grace. City will also be without Vincent Kompany and Stevan Jovetic, while Pellegrini has dismissed concerns about his Spanish striker Alvaro Negredo, stating that "Alvaro is okay, he doesn't have any problem. He just played 45 minutes (against Norwich) because he played 115 minutes three days before."

REF WATCH Taking charge of tonight's game is experienced Spanish referee Carlos Velasco Carballo. This is his third Champions League assignment of the season and all have involved English teams, the 42 year old having overseen Arsenal's win over Fenerbahce and Chelsea's stroll to a 4-0 victory against Bucharest. His assistants are Roberto Alonso and Juan Yuste, with Carlos Del Cerro and Javier Estrada as additional assistants. The fourth official is Roberto Diaz Perez del Palomar. The UEFA delegate is Isak Mikladal and the referees will be observed by Donald Mcvicar.
